As these five Mallards circled me i got the impression from there flying that they should stay behind and follow the leader down to land.

Great moment. The four at the back look as if they're about to have an almighty pile-up ;)

This has to be one of the sharpest in-flight photos I have seen on here. Well done!

Lovely photo David.

I had another attempt at getting some birds in flight today. Only limited success though :)

Cheers!!!!! keep trying practice makes perfect, a technique i use is focus lock, i have a designated a button on the camera to lock focus. i use AF to grab good focus then fine tune it manualy and lock and shoot. you Probably use that technique for ya bike shots i bet, i do aswell but it works well on birds.

However do you consistently get such remarkable birds in flight. You must be one of the best bird photograhers here on dA but I feel that some of your photos aren't getting the recognition they deserve.

Thankyou very much!!!!!! glad you like it, im always looking to capture birds in flight its what they do best!!!!!most of all i like to see the behaviour, something only a camera can capture.

Keep at it!!!! the hardest thing about birds in flight i have learnt is the focusing, my technique is to use AF and manual together, i use the camera to quickly get focus or close to perfect focus. Then i will manually adjust and lock the focus and shoot.
i find it very usefull, espcially for bigger slower birds where they are more predictable and slower giving more time to adjust focus.

I need a better digital camera, I have no manual focus. I see you have a Nikon, is it a digital SLR. I would like something I have more control over.

HHmm thats the beauty of SLR's they give you the freedom and the manual adjustments to capture subjects how you choose. especially birds where the program modes just cannot interpret what it is you are trying to capture. Yes i have
a Nikon and would highly recommend one, they do a D70 which is there entry level SLR which gives a lot of camera performance without the bank braking price.

Cheers!!!! i like this one too, it was funny to watch. the back 4 clearly were not gonna pass the lead duck, they were almost touching and banging into each other trying to maintain that distance.

Animals are so smart and it is neat that they seem to understand their place and role in the scheme of things.

i couldn't agree more!!!!! at the moment i know where there's a albino Blackbird, pure white. im trying to get a shot of it but its very clever!!! and what i've noticed is the other blackbirds look out for it. i have noticed it is reluctant to fly!!!!! it tends to stay on the ground and in bushes probably becaurse it would be a easy target. most fascinating thing i've noticed is the other blackbirds surround it and seem to lead it out to feed. its proving very difficult to capture but i hope to get a good one soon.
